Scales of Chords? Yes!

6.6.1
Scales of Notes vs Scales of Chords

A scale of notes is a melodic scale, from which a melody is composed. A scale of chords is the equivalent in harmony.

Usually, you think of a scale only as an ordered sequence of single notes. Chapter 4 was all about identifying melodic intervals, scale degrees, and the organization of melodic scales.

However, having identified the various harmonic degrees (chords) and harmonic intervals (chord changes, also called chord progressions), they can be organized into harmonic scales—harmonic equivalents of melodic scales.

That means there’s a guaranteed way to write a chord progression that holds together, that sounds like it “knows where it’s going."

Few songwriters know about it, though.
